Music websites for my favourite Indie music genres

Something I like to do in my spare time is listen to music. Apart from that I like to search for new music and the latest Top indie bands to listen to.

I always like to share my music with my friends and people who have that musical background. I notice every time I share any type of indie music genres, I tend to be asked where I get my music from, or where I listen to these different songs no one has ever heard of before.

I started discovering indie record labels and indie music genres back in 2007 when I graduated high school. This is when my musical taste really began to take-off and part itself from all the mainstream junk that is on the radio all the time. I slowly started to research and Google different websites that are not so popular to find the most harmonious music I’ve ever heard in my life.  Some of these websites included sites such as indie rock CafĂ©, indie shuffle, the hype machine, the vibe guide, as well as ear milk. Most of these sites are linked to each other somehow and is used for portals between each other. So if some are wondering where to find top indie bands, search no further than the sites I just listed; that is where you will find these hidden treasures!

Please tell us, what are some sites you go on to search for music?!

Most anticipated albums 2013: Which albums are you guys most excited about?

The excitement is very high already for this year in the music industry and there are a lot of most anticipated albums 2013 has in store for us!

The album releases for 2012 were a good combination, however today I would like to mention some albums that I think a lot of people who are in love with the indie genre just like I am, would like to hear and express their thoughts about. One of the albums I reviewed earlier was the Vampire Weekend album Modern Vampires of the City, and I think this is one of the most anticipated albums 2013 has to offer.

I think some other most awaited albums of 2013 include Toro Y Moi’s Anything in Return, Phoenix’s Bankrupt!, Arcade Fire’s new untitled album, Deerhunter’s Monomania, The Black Keys with their untitled album, the Flaming Lips’ The Terror, as well as MGMT’s untitled album later this year. While this is all exciting news and all, I would love to hear what you are anxious for. Please feel free to share your opinion with the community about any albums you are excited about this year!

Indie Band Names: Misleading Band Names

I’ve always pictured a bands type of music by their band name, and I have never been right once!

Whenever I hear indie band names for the first time I always think whether I like the name of the band or not. For the ones I do like, I look them up and it always surprises me. There are always band names that throw you off and make you think something totally different. For Example, Band of Skulls, you would think this indie band is a heavy metal group because of the band name, but they are an indie rock group from United Kingdom whose influences are Jack White from the White Stripes. Some songs are really rockin’, while other songs are very slow and easy to listen to.

Here are two songs from their debut album ‘Baby Darling Doll Face Honey’, one being rockin’ and one being slower. Once I found this band they have easily become one of my favourites, in my top 10 for sure. They have a second album that came out in 2012 that is just as good as the first one, maybe even better!

Here is a link to the bands official website:

Band of Skulls lead singer Russell Marsden

Here is a list of band names I have always thought were interesting:
Broken Social Scene, The Airborne Toxic Event, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Fleet Foxes, Hot Hot Heat, Japandroids, Metric, My Morning Jacket, and Wintersleep.

What are some other misleading band names?

My top indie bands of 2013

Indie music is my favourite genre and I will list my top indie bands of 2013!

Already so far there have been major releases that I love: Yeah yeah yeah’s, The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, Daft Punk, Foals, Stereophonics, Cold War Kids, and Phoenix.

Out of all of these bands’ releases this year. I will discuss one of my top indie albums so far: The Strokes ‘Comedown Machine’. This is because they are my favourite indie band. Julian Casablancas, the lead singer of The Strokes, is a huge fan of 80’s music and this album really shows it. Most of their songs have 80’s synth rock riffs and interesting guitar riffs that take you back to that decade. This album compared to previous albums is very different, and they took a big risk in doing so.

Spin Magazine: 6/10
NME Magazine: 8/10
Rolling Stone Magazine: 3/5
I give this album 8/10, I love it.
1. Tap Out
2. All The Time
3. One Way Trigger
4. Welcome To Japan
5. 80’s Comedown Machine
6. 50/50
7. Slow Animals
8. Partners In Crime
9. Chances
10. Happy Ending
11. Call It Fate, Call It Karma

What do you think of the new Strokes album?

How to choose the right indie music genres to listen to

If you think you know all the music genres in the Indie category, you’re going to be quite surprised of what I’m about to tell you about Indie music genres.

Just as pop was similar to dance music two generations ago, rock is comparable to the indie genre of today. This is because some top indie bands have a similar sound to normal rock bands expect with some spice added to their melodies. The types of indie music genres really vary in terms of what type of sound that particular band is leaning towards. For example there are seven different types of genres when it comes to indie. There’s indie rock, alternative, synthetic, chill-out, folk, funk, and psychedelic.

The music in this genre to listen to really depends what a person already listens to and what type of music they enjoy hearing. For people who like the laid-back, relaxed type of rhythm, I recommend the chill-out and funk genres, and some alternative depending on which band the music is from. For the people who like a heavier rock-tuned sound, I recommend the regular rock or even the psychedelic if you’re feeling adventurous. As for those souls with the eclectic taste in music, I would recommend the indie genre as a whole because there are lots of distinct sounds to choose from.

Do you guys know what kind of categories you’d like to listen to in the indie genre??

Top Indie Bands: Bonnaroo 2008

I always have friends coming up to me asking, “where do you find all of these new bands?” I tell them to go to a big music festival!

I went to my first music festival in 2008 and I had a blast. The festival is called Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee where I saw some of my favourite bands Pearl Jam, and found new indie music labels that have good bands. Not only did I see some of my favourite bands, I also found some new ones that I still listen to today.

Ever since Bonnaroo 2008 I have gone to a music festival every summer. To be honest I believe that music festivals are more fun than an all inclusive week vacation, because the experience is so much better! Music festivals are the best way to find a new indie band. I have also been to Lollapalooza in Chicago, and Osheaga in Montreal. If you think Tennessee is too far, go to a closer festival like Osheaga.

At Bonnaroo 2008 I discovered bands that I still listen to today like: Against Me!, Iron & Wine, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Tegan and Sarah, Broken Social Scene, and My Morning Jacket.

So, what I am saying is go to a major music festival and see your favourite indie band, but make sure you wander the entire festival and listen to as much music as you can, you might find your next best thing.

How do you find your new music?

What do music festivals mean to you? Share your experience!

The best bands: the top indie bands

There are a countless number of bands in today’s Indie genre, so choosing the top indie bands was a task definitely not for the dull-minded.

Selecting the top bands from the indie genre is definitely a hard choice. There are so many bands out there and they each have their own unique flair with a mix of instruments that really define what kind of music they create from light-on-the-ears xylophone-mixed songs, to deep and heavy base filled noise (which is still pleasurable to some).

To not make this list continue forever (which I could) I'm going to name the top ten indie bands that stand out right away, that have the most distinct sound, in no particular order. First off, I want to mention the band that most likely started the indie-listening for most people and they are Radiohead. They are absolutely distinguishable from any other and offer lots of versatility. Some of my personal favourites include Tame Impala, The Strokes, Gorillaz, Foals, and the dead weather. Other indie band names that I feel have to be mentioned for their multifaceted melody are Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Odd Future, and of course The Generationals. Here are some links that you guys would enjoy to explore about these bands:

Most awaited albums of 2013: Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City

Vampire Weekend is a band us Indie music lovers have listened to ever since Indie became a word, and this band continues to amaze audiences worldwide with one of the most awaited albums of 2013.

Vampire Weekend has a very distinct sound and instrumentals that are almost instantly recognized which some people like to call African-tinged pop music. Not having any album releases for 2012, they made their fans wait for their next album which came just in time for the summer of 2013. Having the sound that they do, I think Modern Vampires of the City is pretty much the perfect album for the start of summer; it really makes you feel as if you were a kid listening to a childhood favourite of yours whilst having the adult responsibilities that we all have.

This album was very well done and feels like a rare thought-through in today’s indie music genre. The best songs of this album were the slow and relaxed jams such as ‘step’ that is rather different than anything we've heard before, however still has that eloquent voice of Ezra Koenig. These songs are a huge step forward for Vampire Weekend and Indie music as a whole and we’re all going to be hearing a lot more in the time coming about Modern Vampires of the City because it’s a pretty much perfect album for the perfect time.

What did you guys think of Modern Vampires of the City?

What are the best indie songs 2012??

There have countless songs throughout the year, and year after year there are more bands than ever before. In my opinion the best indie songs 2012 consists of many different genres and talented artists which come from different backgrounds and have totally different sounds to their music.

Looking back over this year, there was a lot of artists with amazing songs that stood out. I noticed a refined yet seismic change in my own listening habits than ever before. Now, the top songs of 2012 don’t necessarily mean top indie songs 2012. Recently the top songs of 2012 typically means the most main stream music of today, which consists of music on the radio and more conventional than actual indie music. That being said, music taste varies from person to person, so my favourite songs might not be everyone’s favourite songs, but I do guarantee that they are the Best indie songs 2012.

Now one of my favourites of 2012 include little talks by Bombay bicycle club, imprint after by toro y moi, breezeblocks by Alt-j, default by Django Django, Vijae astral by Dumbo gets mad, and R u mine by Arctic Monkeys. There are a lot more of best indie songs of 2012, the list is very long, that is why we will keep you updated and keep you enjoying the music!

What are your favourite songs of 2012? Feel free to share as many as you can!
